Twitter’s Political Tribes

Can you profile somebody’s political affiliation using only their Twitter followers?

Starting with @tweetminster’s list of 551 UK MP’s on Twitter, I pulled each account’s follower and following relationships then used Gephi to build a network graph.

1.8 million unique Twitter accounts with 5.2m follower and following relationships were fed into the analysis and then filtered to include every account followed by at least 20% of the MPs. The result is a profile of UK political Twitter, based on who Members of Parliament themselves choose to follow.

How do you find a particular account? Use the search box to look for their name (not their @handle) and then hover over their name on the popup on the right hand side of the screen.
